Elwood English Tutors was founded in 2022 by Ed Beaumont and is based on Elwood Street, Islington, North London. Ed believes that, with the right support, every student can achieve in English. His high quality, bespoke lessons help students to reconnect with their own innate ability and express their ideas with clarity and confidence.
Ed has a lifelong passion for education. At sixteen he was awarded a scholarship to attend Pearson United World College (below) on the tree lined shores of Vancouver Island, Canada. This opportunity, a world away from his previous experience of education in Cardiff, demonstrated the value and impact of high quality education. After graduating from Pearson, then from Queen's University, Belfast (BA, English & Philosophy) and Cardiff University (MA, English Literature), Ed worked with the National Dance Company of Wales, International Baccalaureate and UNICEF UK.
Recalling his time in Canada, he retrained as a teacher with Teach First in 2014, and was assigned to a busy Tottenham secondary school that serves students living in a community facing some of the most challenging circumstances in the UK. Within two years, Ed had risen to Head of English and led the team to a double digit improvement in GCSE results. At Woodside High School, Ed taught students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, varying levels of experience within the UK education system and facing many individual and academic challenges, during which he supported them to understand and embrace their SEND, personal identity and mental health.
In 2022 Ed founded Elwood English Tutors so that he could focus on doing what he loves most: help others to experience a high quality education. Since opening, Ed has helped students achieve their goals; from gaining a place at prestigious schools such as Highgate or City of London, to learning how to work with their Dyslexia or achieving the very highest grades in final examinations.
Ed also has a PGCE, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), is a member of the Tutors' Association, a volunteer on the selections committee for UWC Great Britain and an examiner. He lives with Olivia, his wife, and daughter on Elwood Street.
