Student safety is paramount. Ed has over 15 years of experience working with and for children and young people, including at the International Baccalaureate, UNICEF UK, as a volunteer for the United World Colleges GB National Committee and as a former Head of English at Woodside High School in Wood Green, London. Ed is a qualified teacher (QTS), has an Enhanced DBS check and is a member of The Tutors' Association. To find out more about Ed, visit the About us page.
Whenever possible, we provide a choice of location for your lessons. At the moment, however, Ed's schedule is very full with students, so it's likely that classes will either be at Elwood Street or online via Zoom. Schedule permitting, home visits are available for N1, N4, N5, N8 and N16 only.
Oftentimes, students, parents or carers feel more comfortable when they've visited Elwood Street, so please feel free to come along to meet Ed before your first lesson. If you do, you'll likely also be welcomed by my little daughter, who loves to tell you all about her day.
For our safety, privacy and the security of intellectual property, no lessons are recorded without full written permission.
Once you've registered and booked your first lesson, there are a few things you can do to ensure you are prepared.
At Elwood Street, we have a bright, sunlit room, sprinkled with leafy houseplants and a snoozing greyhound. If you have booked a home visit or a zoom call, it's important that there's a suitable space for us to learn; ideally somewhere quiet, with a table and chairs. We all work best without distractions, so it's best if there are no phones or other people close by.
It's helpful if you also have some of your own resources: a pen, lined paper, a file to keep your work in and, if possible, some examples of your school work. This could be a recent assessment, your school book or simply something you've written yourself.
Once your registration has been approved, through the Student Portal you also gain access to hundreds of helpful resources, past papers and useful exercises to support your learning journey.
Finally, it can be helpful before we start to find out exactly where you are on your own personal journey in English. Try this short exercise:
Think about which parts of your English learning you have enjoyed in the past and feel confident when asked to do now. For example, it could be a particular text or character you like, creative writing or expressing your ideas in class. Write down 3-5 things that come to mind.
Then think about times with your English learning when you feel less confident, are unsure what to do or don't feel satisfied with the work you produce. It may be understanding a particular poem or exam, for example. Write down 1-3 things you'd really like to improve.
When we meet, we can discuss what you wrote. As my granddad used to say, 'The best place to start is where you are now.'
